Vostok carried the first human into space when Yuri Gagarin
orbited the earth once on April 12, 1961. Five other flights carried
cosmonauts into orbit for periods of up to several days. The first
woman in space also flew aboard a Vostok spacecraft. Unmanned
derivatives of the Vostok are still flown today.
